Digital Photo: Things to Know

By: John Oxton

The best thing about a digital photo is that you can manipulate it to the extent of your imagination. This manipulation can be achieved thanks to various software packages available on the market, varying in complexity from the feature packed Adobe Photoshop to Paint Shop Pro.

Still, there is magic when a digital photo is modified by experienced hands and eyes, allowing that unbelievable moment to be captured in such a way as to never be forgotten, but even then they can be refined further. It is the story or the impression behind that moment that keeps the viewer enamoured with the photo for a longer period of time.

It takes time to become a perfect photographer and one needs to grow though experimentation and experiences.

However a basic knowledge of the techniques of photographing is must. A digital camera is not all that is required to make a good photographer.

Primarily, know your camera well. Read the manual top to bottom, and then go out to play with the machine.

Now come back to the basics and learn about other things like exposure, shutter speed, aperture etc that helps you to customize your digital photo in real time. You can find a lot of hand books online and offline to get an initial idea of how this is achieved.

As a brief explanation of some of the primary terms; exposure is the point in the process of taking a photo when the light sensitive film or sensor is exposed to a light source. Over or under exposure may destroy the image, so be careful while setting it in your digital camera and capturing the photo.

Shutter speed is the time period for which the shutter is held open for light to reach the digital photo sensor. Depending on the variations of combinations of lens aperture and sensor's sensibility, it regulates how much light the camera will record when taking a digital photo. Shutter speed can directly affect the quality of your digital photo dependant on the situation and whether the object is moving or still.

An aperture is a hole or the gap through which light enters into the camera sensor or the film.
One should always remember that they cannot go far when skipping the basics of the trade when taking these elements into consideration.

There are so many other important aspects that you need to know for taking visually good digital photo. We will come to them later.

Now, when you go out again to play with your digital camera, try to realise the potential for variance with all aspects mentioned here. With a digital camera you always have the option to know about the quality of the photo without taking a print.

One last thought: while taking a digital photo try to sort out by yourself the relationship between "object" and "film-depth".

Last minute experiment: keeping camera settings the same, change the location of the object in respect to the frame. Download these digital photos in your computer and study them critically and objectively.

You have all the answers.

Pros and Cons of Camera Cell Phones

By: Declan Tobin

All the major phone manufacturers are cashing in on the ever increasing market in camera phones. Companies such as Nokia, Siemens, Motorola and many more have seen their profits sore since the introduction of the camera cell phone. Many of the cell phone carriers are offering a free camera phone for new customers to their networks.

What are the benefits of owning a camera cell phone?

Yes the camera cell phone is a luxury and very affordable to buy but the there are many advantages to having such a phone. How many times have you been in a position where you wished "if only I had a camera" It's easy to send a picture to friends or family who may live far away or overseas. Pictures saved on the camera can be easily uploaded to your home computer. Camera phones today offer high resolution photos with red eye reduction and different zoom options. You can take an excellent scenic photo and set it uniquely setup as your background image. The quality of the photo will depend on the type of phone you purchase but overall the camera phone is an excellent purchase.

Disadvantages of owning a camera cell phone:

Like everything there is always a downside. Camera cell phones have a number of disadvantages over standard cell phones. Firstly they are generally more expensive to buy. Sending photos to friends or family from your cell phone is a costly activity. You need to check with your cell phone carrier to see the rates. It is much more expensive than sending a general text. Sometimes the quality of the photo is not as clear as you may have expected. Some people find it difficult to focus the lens using the phone.
It can be costly if the lens gets cracked and needs to be replaced (some camera phone lens cannot be replaced and the whole phone will need to be changed)

Remember if you are purchasing a camera cell phone go the extra mile and get insurance. Unfortunately in today's world they are the type of gadget that pick pockets only love.
What is the cheapest way to get a camera cell phone?

If you a new user to the mobile world check out the different cell phone promotions offered by the carriers such as Cingular, T-Mobile, Verizon and others. These types of companies will offer free camera phones if you sign up to their network. Generally the camera phone will not be the top of the range but certainly good enough for you to practice with as your first camera cell phone. Once you have been on the network (generally for 6 months to one year) you may be entitled to an upgrade / trade in (check with the carrier before you sign any contracts).
Photo and movies:

Apart from photos most camera cell phones can act as a mini camcorder. You generally get a 30 second movie feature with even the basic camera phone. You can even upload or sync the movie clip you have just created to your PC and transfer to the Internet or simply email it to friends or family. This feature is ideal for special occasions such as birthdays or even a wedding clip for those who cannot travel.

Overview:

The camera cell phone is by far the best seller on today's market. Very popular with people of all ages. They are convenient and generally inexpensive to run (providing you do not abuse sending photos all the time to friends). If you are not at the level of a professional photographer and just want the party or fun pictures the camera cell phone is ideal, small and tidy to carry and mostly good quality pictures.

Remember to shop around for the best offers and ask the different carriers their rates for sending pictures MMS. You will be surprised at the different rates offered. Camera cell phones are also available as a prepaid cell phone but remember, prepaid cell phones a more expensive than one with line rental and MMS rates are generally very high per text.

Best Digital Prints: Things to Remember

By: John Oxton

So, you have captured that wonderful moment, a beautiful image in your digital camera!
Now, you are preparing to take a print to make a gift to your dear and near one or for your personal collection!

Now here is the crux!

In the majority of such cases, as our experience tells us, people are not sure what the maximum size can be for a digital print, without that image distorting! Many people think that they can make the image as big as they want, then print without knowing about the "image stitching technique"! And when there is distortion, they blame the printer for low visual quality.

One must remember that what looks the worst from a close distance may look the best if the distance between the image and the viewer is increased (10 to 15 feet or more) in case of larger digital prints.
While taking digital prints, the photographer should consider critically how the image will be displayed for a better, if not the best viewing experience.

There are some digital printers too, who do not know the limit or only who only concentrate on money rather than the quality of the output offered. Sometimes they forget that what is merely a digital photo to them, may be a precious moment to the photographer, which may never be repeated!

The maximum size that a printout of a digital photo can be, depends on various aspects. But the common aspect can be the following if you are thinking of having your photo printed for yourself:

If you are using a commercial 1.2 mega pixel camera, the best digital prints may come as around an 8x10' photo, whereas an 11x14' is almost the limit.

If you are using a commercial 3 mega pixel camera, the best digital prints may come as around an 11x14' photo, whereas a 16x20' is almost the limit.

If you are using a commercial 4 mega pixel camera, the best digital prints may come as around a 20x24' photo, whereas a 30x40' is almost the limit.

Another way of estimating the best possible result before taking digital prints, is calculating PPI (final print resolution). If you divide the width (pixel) by your desired print size (inches) you get PPI. As a general rule, if your final print PPI is around 200 to 400, you get an overall good digital photo.

Having a photo printer at home may save you for in some instances. However buying a printer is not a lasting solution for having quality digital photos. The cost is often too high in comparison to the reasonable prices offered by renowned printers for digital prints.

These days you don't need to go out searching for printers from the high street to produce a good quality digital print! You can find better quality and cheaper digital prints sitting back at home over internet.

Hopefully, getting your quality digital prints will not be so hard next time.

Happy imaging.

Intro 101: Make Money Taking Great Photographs

By: Christine Bettridge

You love taking photographs and people keep telling you that you have a great eye. How difficult is it really to make money from your photographs?

There's a lot to taking good photo's and there's no way that one article could cover all the aspects of a good photo. This is an overview on how to get started taking making money with your hobby.

Before you start you will need:

a decent camera doesn't have to cost the earth but it can be all the difference when it comes to making beautiful photo's

to understand the different features on your camera learning to use the special features on your camera can make all the difference.

to keep your eyes peeled for good photo opportunities at all times.

When judging photos generally the three main elements are judged. The crispness / sharpness of the image, the composition and the subject.

The sharpness of your images can be improved by focusing properly. Zoom all the way in to the intended subject and focus. Then zoom out to the desired distance. The focus should be sharper.
The composition: whole books have been written about composition and there is a broad and fascinating science behind it. In general the law of thirds should serve you well when trying to make a well composed shot. Divide the frame into 3x3 lined sections. All the action should center along the lines.

This means the subject should never be entirely in the center of the frame. When trying to compose your shot always try to balance the elements within the frame. You will get a feel for this with practice.
The subject - when taking commercial photo's this is obviously very important. You will want to photograph a wide variety of subjects.

Anyone can make a good living from selling stock photos. Look online or even set up your own.
You must remember that selling anything takes work. You will need to spend a great deal of time marketing yourself and your work.

If you are serious about making money from your photo's then you need to start putting together a portfolio containing your best work. Having a portfolio on hand can be very useful when wanting to impress prospective buyers. Consider putting together an online portfolio to reach an international market faster. You could even set up an online sales system selling your photos.

If you really know a lot about photography consider sending some of your best work in to one of the photographic magazines with a step by step account of your procedure and equipment used. It's worth the effort because you gain valuable exposure as an expert in your field.

You could use some more unconventional methods to generate cash with your camera. What about making screensavers from beautiful photos? If you don't have the technical know how you can ask someone to show you quite easily. Many people make good money this way.

There are all kinds of other markets you can consider selling your photo's to. Online magazines, print magazines, newspapers, travel brochures and books all need photos. Keep your eye's open for any publications that appeal to your niche.

All that's left to do it grab your camera and start shooting!
